Oftentimes new mothers are faced with so much uncertainty and fears. One of those fears is that their baby won't be able to latch or breastfeed properly. Occasionally, that can be caused by a tongue or a lip tie, which is a thin portion of tissue that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth, or the top to the jaw.
When that connection is too strong and too firm, the baby can lose the mobility that it needs in order to create a good latch. When that latch isn't possible, the baby's not going to be able to nurse properly. There's other options around it, but the best way to do it is take care of it is with this new CO2 laser that we've invested in.
It used to be that we had to use scalpel blades and other things like that, which, the healing time was longer, the baby was in more pain. This new laser technology helps us to be able to do this procedure where we release that flap of skin on the top or bottom depending on what the baby needs, allowing them to have that extra mobility.
They may need to relearn those movements now that they have the extra mobility, but we've seen great success from that. The babies have been able to have a latch afterwards. It's not a silver bullet, but a lot of times it does help babies quite a bit with their ability to latch and nurse.
Our Keller, TX dentists want the best for everyone in your family, which is why they provide very delicate and highly beneficial tongue tie laser surgery.
Tongue tie is a condition that causes an infant’s tongue to be somewhat anchored to the bottom of the mouth by the flap of tissue under the tongue. This flap, called the frenum, may need to be adjusted to:
- Allow the baby to better receive the nutritional value from breastfeeding
- Reduce the stress of both mother and child, as tongue tie makes it difficult for the baby to properly latch onto the mother
- Eliminate speech difficulties later in life, which tongue tie is known to cause
This condition also affects adults who weren’t diagnosed when they were younger. If you suspect you’re dealing with this issue, we will help you as well.
